This was kind of like teaching someone to build a house just by showing them what parts are needed. Something as simple as joining a messageboard for novel writers would help a lot.

I agree with you, gen.

I’ll draw an analogy to punk music. Many of the bands that I love started out as punk bands, but did not end up so. Punk was a deconstruction of music, eschewing the elitism of overblown 70s rock (some of which I like, too). It’s a stepping stone to understanding how records are written, performed, recorded, and produced. I don’t like much punk, but it influenced an enormous variety of bands who were later embraced – Cure, U2, Smiths, Joy Division.\

Screw elitism.
