This is very good. Every process needs guideposts, and novel writing is no different. If you just wander around writing a lot of words, it might be entertaining for a while, but if you don’t take the reader somewhere, you won’t hold their interest.

Nice. Hey, my channel has many free lessons in writing, from plotting, to show and tell, to creating suspense. Just click my nick, and then browse my playlist. People say they’ve learned more from my videos than they ever did taking writing courses. That makes me feel good.

If you enjoy my vids, spread the word.

Feel free to post a video response of one of your videos.

I took a full page of notes on this and I thought that this was really helpful. It’s easier for me to understand it if it’s visual. :)

Think of them as guidelines rather than rules.

I appreciated this video. It’s one of several good ones on YouTube.

You can glean ideas from many sources. Then piece a system together that works for you.

Like a friend once said: Eat the chicken and throw away the bones.

  6. madmethod21 Says:

Fuck this, it’s way to technical. A story has to come from some desire within you to express your emotions. A writer is an artist, she makes it seem like a trade or some kind of technical skill. This is not for me.

For anyone really wanting to write a novel, you should totally read On Writing by Stephan King. I have yet to find a better book on writing.

For me, this is way too complicated of a system, I’m more of a “one word after another” kind of guy. I would go crazy if I had to add index cards into the picture.

  8. zeroknight55 Says:

Well, you wouldn’t want them to be happy, and stay happy. That’s boring. For example, the book is about a family roadtrip around the country. Would you rather read about their excellent sights and rather lenient traffic, or about the struggles that they would encounter: broken down vehicle, not enough money, maybe a homicidal hitchhiker. It’s all about conflict->resolution.

wow the person who down rated my comment is a retard. I was saying it was helpful to ME you didnt have to be gay and down rate it..

  12. Flaoither3 Says:

    DUDE, this was soooo helpfull!!!!!!!!

  13. MomoTheBellyDancer Says:

Dividing a big task into smaller ones is always a good idea, of course, but I wouldn’t call it “dumbing down”. Writing a novel can be easy or it can be the most excruciating thing ever. It all depends on your talent, your background, the complexity of the story and your goals.

  14. MomoTheBellyDancer Says:

To some writing is an intellectual game. As long as it leads to something worth reading, it’s all okay.

  15. calebp9503 Says:

I agree. There are too many “paint by number” books out there already. And whats all this: “A good novel makes characters lives miserable before everything turns out in the end . . .” It sounds like the sort of cookie cutter writing that puts people to sleep. I like books that challenge me and make me feel something.

  16. MrGameposter Says:

“You should not try to reduce fiction to this sort of intellectual game because that’s npt what it is.”
    -Stephen King

    I agree with you, gen.

I’ll draw an analogy to punk music. Many of the bands that I love started out as punk bands, but did not end up so. Punk was a deconstruction of music, eschewing the elitism of overblown 70s rock (some of which I like, too). It’s a stepping stone to understanding how records are written, performed, recorded, and produced. I don’t like much punk, but it influenced an enormous variety of bands who were later embraced – Cure, U2, Smiths, Joy Division.\

    Screw elitism.

  18. NauticalFILMS Says:

LOL. I remember my community college professor say synopsis as –
    “SYM POST SEEMU”.

She was wrong. I was correct. I knew it.

I bet Proust didn’t watch this. Maybe John Grisham did.

  20. Kwinnky Says:

This was kind of like teaching someone to build a house just by showing them what parts are needed. Something as simple as joining a messageboard for novel writers would help a lot.

  21. C0MMANDER38 Says:

I’m sure a paint-by-numbers novel would be great.

  22. PanavisionLove Says:

Im reading a lot of positive and negative feedback but hey, to each his / her own.

  23. xBillyTheKidx Says:

patronizing is pretty much the choice word for this video.

  24. Schitzophreniccheemo Says:

this video was a little patronizing, and i have no idea why, but it gave me some gr8 ideas, lol
