I agree, always hard to get on yer side and out, but once you do you need to know where your going.

Isn’t the hard part getting out from under his weight? How does this work if he is driving you into mat.

skinnyruss..spoken like a true whitebelt…lol…=)

Sorry russ, Joez86 is correct.
I am the person in the videos you are referring to. I had two matches against Cleber this year. The first was at the Copa Pacifica and he caught me in a toehold (he was countering my kneebar attempt) with about 30 seconds left in the match. At the North Americans he beat me on points.
Cleber is phenomenal and has been a black belt longer than I have been training. It was an honor to get on the mat and test myself against him.

Talking about the 2009 North American. No tap Skinny.

HeyJoeZ…I dont know what tournament ur talking about but Cleber made this guy tap like maybe 2 minutes into the blackbelt fight at the tourny in Redondo Beach a few months ago and made him tap at the Copa Pacifica earlier this yea…get ur facts str8 before u make urself look foolish

Luciano fought well but if you cant submit your opponent I wouldnt quite use the word own Someone can collect points but if he cant tap-out his challenger he doesnt own anything.

I guess..
I have always used the cross lapel myself and that has worked fine. It just struck me as odd that he emphasized it like that.
August 24th, 2009 at 5:19 pm
its a preference only. I use the opposite side grip for this sweep.
August 26th, 2009 at 1:13 pm
Well if you got that wouldn’t you just go for the choke..
August 28th, 2009 at 10:28 am
That guy in the video with machado is the guy who got owned by Cleber Luciano at the last few so cal tourneys

Love those sweeps.
Does anyone know more about his reasoning regarding not getting the cross lapel grip with the overhooking hand?

Tales Leites trains at our school when he’s in the States, and i know he’s a great half guard player…. g luck
September 5th, 2009 at 1:22 am
he puts big emphasis on it thats where the beginning of all of eddie bravo’s emphasis on guard comes from jj’s half guard teachings since he has that handicap his game is alot of hooks which is very good look at jj in the adcc armhooks are mad strong

Is JJ a big half guard player? I am and I need to find a good guy to emulate in this position. He’s a big hero of mine overcoming that handicap in a huge way. Anyway, this is like one of 5 half guard moves on youtube from JJ.

hey fabyfakid, try to become familiar with the spider guard as well…that will increase your chances for attacks, sweeps and mainly control….hope it works…
September 8th, 2009 at 3:47 pm
great stuff, I have short legs, so the full guard is very hard for me to maintain or work from, so I’ve been finding a home with the half guard and the butterfly guard.
September 9th, 2009 at 6:14 am
I think he was born with the handicap. but in my opinion it has been his streanth first because others probably underestimate him and second because he learned to persivere
September 10th, 2009 at 11:51 pm
Very beatiful and useful sweep for a problematic situation.
September 12th, 2009 at 7:17 am
I don’t think he’d want you to feel sorry for him – it’s not been a handicap to him becoming an amazing grappler
September 14th, 2009 at 10:23 am
Machado is the best! I feel sorry for him cause of his left hand… What happened to him?
September 16th, 2009 at 9:23 pm
also you could try under hooking the right leg when they post and sweep them the other direction. thats the variations jj machado shows in his book championship techniques.
